When I went vegan I was trying to force my friends and family to go vegan.
I was going about it the completely wrong way. You have to remember that going vegan is a completely different lifestyle. When you try to pressure someone to go vegan, you are changing everything they’ve known their whole life.
It is hard to unlearn everything we thought was healthy and good for us and relearn new healthy ways of eating. Some people don’t make changes until they’re ready.
So here are some tips I learned that actually work
1. DON’T PRESSURE ANYONE TO GO VEGAN
People, friends and family will watch you, see your transformation and go vegan if they’re ready. If someone asks questions about your diet, that is when you can educate them. I hear vegans always frustrated when people ask “what about protein?” Don’t get frustrated because they’re opening the can of worms. That gives you a green light to talk about veganism and educate them because they could genuinely be wondering
2. FEED THEM
This is so crucial because most people think vegans eat nuts and salad all day… which is definitely not true.
When you show them they can eat delicious food that they are used to, without killing living beings they will be more open to it.
3. Go to the grocery with them
Show them the little health food sections and vegan food. They will probably say they never saw any of those things.
4. Help them veganize their favorite recipes
All you have to do is replace cheese with vegan cheese, eggs with vegan eggs, bananas or applesauce, and milk with one of the million other milks out there like almond, hemp or coconut.
5. Suggest documentaries
Give them a list of documentaries they should watch with world renown doctors talking about how plant-based diets are so much healthier for us. There are tons of great documentaries on Gaia.com if you want to check those out, I highly recommend it.
6. Tell them how you feel
For example, before I was breaking out and I didn’t have energy, but now my skin looks amazing and I have so much energy.
Most importantly, if they make any steps to go vegan make sure they know you are proud of them. Even if they only change a little bit, its better than not changing at all. And accept it if they don’t want to go vegan and just work on yourself… maybe one day they will come around.
Gaia.com has tons of amazing ones.
